Composite Bonding3rd April 2020
Dentistry has evolved exponentially over the last two decades. Our knowledge, techniques, materials and equipment have all developed and combined to provide predictable, safe, and highly aesthetic treatment without the fear of discomfort.
At Euston Place Dental Practice, our overriding ambition is to change the perception of dentistry. We aim high and we are determined to achieve our goal by delivering the very best that contemporary dentistry has to offer. Our caring and very experienced team are equipped with state of the art 3D imaging technology that allows our patients an unparalleled insight and understanding of their dental health. Computer aided design and manufacture allow us to provide beautiful ceramic tooth reconstructions on site and same day to save even the most compromised teeth. Our investment in 3D medical grade printing technology sets us apart as pioneers in the UK; we are at the forefront of how this exciting development can enhance all aspects of dental care, especially the replacement of missing teeth with precisely guided implant placement.
There are so many developments that it is impossible to capture them all in one article, so in this issue I will focus on one of the simpler yet effective methods of significantly improving the appearance of your smile.
Composite bonding is a cosmetic technique that enhances your teeth to give the appearance of a straighter, whiter smile. It can be used as a cosmetic solution for misshapen and chipped teeth, gaps and staining. Unlike porcelain veneer placement, which is much more invasive, takes multiple visits, and incurs significantly higher costs, composite resin bonding can be completed in one appointment as a minimally invasive and relatively low cost approach.
Composite bonding is a safe and effective technique that was developed more than 50 years ago. Over the last three decades, materials and techniques have been refined, resulting in a very efficient and effective treatment.
This treatment starts with minimal abrasion of the surface enamel that often requires no injections. This is followed by a micro-etching technique that allows flowable resin to infiltrate and bond securely to the tooth. Biomimetic tooth coloured monomer resin of the desired whiteness is then adapted to the required shape to ensure a beautiful tooth form. Once in place, the resin can be set almost instantly by the application of curing light; a high-power LED emitting blue light changes the mouldable monomer resin to a robust durable polymer resin in under 10 seconds. The result can then last anywhere from three to ten years dependent upon the future care it receives. This treatment can be combined with tooth whitening to enhance the result even further as can be seen in the cases below.

Most people can benefit from this technique if their teeth are generally well aligned. Others may require tooth realignment prior to treatment if there is crowding or tooth displacement. This no longer demands the placement of unsightly brackets and wires. Digital scanning and 3D printing now enable us to improve tooth alignment with removable clear appliances that produce attractive smiles.
